Performing to a capacity audience at St Mary’s Church, Temple Balsall on Saturday night was a delight. The Giocoso ladies – all five of them – joined forces with Birmingham’s Basement Big Band, led by Steve King, to liven up a cold November evening. With the Basement Band’s front row featuring three fifths of Giocoso, we swung our way through Niehaus, Nestico and Stevie Wonder. Giocoso brought a different feel to the evening, with the beautifully melodic All Because of You (written for saxophone quintet by Karen Street), a bit of latino with Colin Crabb’s Sax in the City and Philip Buttall’s Samba a la Turca.
Making full use of the church’s gorgeous acoustics, alto player Kate O’Malley delivered some classic jazz vocals, including Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend, Fever, and That Ole Devil Called Love. All in all, a great night with lots of money raised to help the church.
